While they face numerous hurdles along their journey towards strengthening neighborhoods block by block.
My Block, My Hood, My City provides an inspiring example of youth empowerment at work. Since its creation by Jahmal Cole in 2022, this organization has touched hundreds of young Chicagoans’ lives through its Explorer’s Program that introduces teens to experiences beyond their neighborhoods – over 2000 young Chicagoans alone benefitted from educational and leadership development programs provided in 2022!
Housing security remains key to community stability and The Night Ministry stands as an inspirational beacon of hope for those experiencing homelessness. Their innovative outreach programs – Youth Housing Program and Health Outreach Bus among them – provided assistance for over 6,000 individuals last year alone; additionally their work encompassed longer term solutions that provided sustainable living options.
After School Matters is revolutionizing how Chicago teens spend their after-school hours. Through arts, sports, technology, leadership development and community safety programs they serve over 19,000 teens per year across 400 programs! Their impact extends well beyond education alone: creating ripple effects through community safety initiatives as well as youth employment initiatives.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository takes food insecurity head on by connecting over 700 partner organizations and initiatives across Cook County with meals as well as nutrition education programs – last year they distributed an incredible 117 Million Pounds which ensured less Chicagoans went without sustenance!
Urban Gateways supports arts and culture through arts education programs in underserved communities. Each year, Urban Gateways’ courses on artistic expression show young people its power for social transformation and community building.
These organizations represent only a portion of Chicago’s nonprofit ecosystem that work to strengthen neighborhoods. Their successes demonstrate that when passionate individuals join together with clear missions and community support to bring about real change, positive transformation becomes not just possible but inevitable.
